UEF international workshop on the role of the EU in civialian Crisis management

Right at the very beginning of the Austrian EU- Presidency an international workshop on the “Role of the EU in Civilian Crisis Management” will be held in Vienna on 12 and 13 January 2006.


This event will be the occasion to review the contribution of the EU to peace and stability in crisis affected areas in various regions mof the world and to examine ways for a better use of civilian European Security and Defence Policy and community instruments in the framework of European external action. Moreover, mechanisms for an effective coordination between the different actors in the management of operations will be discussed (see programme attached). 


The organisers of the event, the UEF-supranational and the Austrian Study-Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, expect more than 120 participants. Representatives of the 25 EU member states, the European Commission, the Council Secretariat, the Committee for Civilian Aspects of Crisis Management as well as members of the European Parliament and of European NGOs working in the field of Conflict Prevention will take part in the panels and working groups. Martti AHTISAARI, former President of the Republic of Finland and current President of the Crisis Management Initiative , Karl von Wogau, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence of the European Parliament as well as Ursula PLASSNIK, Austrian Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs will be amongst the many highranking personalities addressing the workshop.
